*Picea abies (Linnaeus) H. Karsten. Norway Spruce. Hab: Fairly commonly planted in the montane and northern parts of our area as a street or yard tree, also persisting and escaping from forestry plantations at moderate or high elevations, notably in e. WV, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Kephart Prong), Mount Mitchell State Park, and the Biltmore Estate. Dist: Native of n. Europe.
ID notes: Recognizable at a distance by its "swoop and droop" profile. Major branches (from the trunk) swoop downward and then turn upwards; minor branches (attached to the major branches) mainly hang downwards.
