Intro: Erect biennial/perennial from a taproot, found in disturbed areas, such as pastures, fields and roadsides.

Stems: Stems thick, branched above, often reddish, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves mostly basal, a few alternate on stem; petiolate with the stalk sheathing at base, lance-shaped, 2-12 in. long (stem leaves smaller), with undulating margins, sometimes red-tinged.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in whorled clusters on tall, narrow, branching racemes at top of plant; yellowish-green to reddish, 1/4 in. long, consisting of 6 oval tepals, the 3 inner ones remaining attached to fruit.

Fruits: Fruit a tiny, brown achene enclosed in 3 papery, green or reddish, heart-shaped wings.

Comments: Native of Europe.
