Stems: Stems simple, green or purple, smooth below and with spreading hairs above.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, evenly distributed along stem; lower and middle leaves triangular to arrowhead-shaped and 3-lobed (lobes angular) or unlobed, 1-5 in. long, some tinged with purple, hairy or smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) drooping from short stalks on upper branches; cylindric heads about 1/2 in. long, consisting of 5-13 greenish-yellow ray florets surrounded by 5 bristly-hairy, green bracts with dark tips.

Fruits: Fruit a tufted achene.
