Berberis Linnaeus. Subfamily: Berberidoideae. Barberry.

Key to Berberis

A genus of about 500 species, shrubs, of North America, South America, Asia, Europe, and n. Africa. Many authors have favored the inclusion of Mahonia in Berberis, but we here follow Yu & Chung (2017) in their delineation of genera in this group (see Mahonia for a more detailed explanation).

Key advice:Other species of Berberis are less commonly used horticulturally in our area. Though none appear to be established at this time, the possibility of encountering species other than those treated should be kept in mind.
