Paronychia baldwinii (Torrey & A. Gray) Fenzl ex Walpers ssp. riparia (Chapman) Chaudhri. Common name: Perennial Dune Whitlow-wort. Phenology: Jun-Oct. Habitat: Dry sandy sites, woodlands or dune. Distribution: Se. VA south to n. FL (and AL?), on the Coastal Plain.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Though Chaudhri (1968) and Ward (1977a and 1977b) independently reached the conclusion to reduce P. riparia to a subspecies of P. baldwinii, neither stated any reasons for their choice of subspecific status. I here follow the independent conclusions of Chaudhri and Ward, but the appropriate taxonomic rank remains unclear.
