Taxonomy Comments: Two taxa have been questionably distinguished. Ssp. americana, with the cymes many-flowered and forming spheroidal glomerules, has the range of the species; ssp. pauciflora (Small) Chaudhri, differing in its laxer, more open cymes, is restricted to s. GA and n. FL.
